Tropical Storm Dorian (right) approaching the Southern Windwards (left)
Even as Barbados was spared the wrath of Tropical Storm Dorian yesterday, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have now been placed under a hurricane watch by the National Hurricane Center (NHC.)
In its 5 pm advisory yesterday, the NHC said Dorian had the possibility of developing into a hurricane over the next few days and it is expected to make landfall in Florida by Sunday.
Tropical Storm warnings previously issued for Martinique, Dominica, Saba and St Eustatius were discontinued yesterday. At 5 pm, a Hurricane Watch was in effect for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Samana.
Tropical Storm warnings were in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Samana.
A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Punta Palenque and the Dominican Republic from Samana to Puerto Plata.
NHC said a Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area and watches are typically issued 48 hours before the start of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.
The NHC said data from the Guadeloupe radar indicated that the center of Dorian was located near latitude 15.3 North and longitude 62.5 West.
Dorian was moving towards the West-Northwest at near 13 mph (20 kph) and was expected to continue on that path until Wednesday when it will begin to head Northwest.
The center of the storm was expected to move across the Northeastern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday night and it was expected to pass over or near Western and Central Puerto Rico on Wednesday. On Wednesday night, Dorian is expected to be just East of Hispaniola and between Thursday night and Friday, move near or to the East of the Turks and Caicos and the Southeastern Bahamas.
Its maximum sustained winds remained near the 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the centre.
